The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine, Knoxville (UTHSC COM-Knoxville), Office of Research Support (ORS) serves as an important resource for UTHSC COM-Knoxville Faculty, Fellows, Residents, and staff participating in research activities. We provide support and guidance to facilitate the continued advancement of UTHSC COM-Knoxville research programs. For clinical studies, we ensure that the research being conducted yields high-quality data and adheres to local and federal regulations associated with the use of human research subjects and/or the use of their data.
Services and/or training available for UTHSC COM-Knoxvile Faculty, Residents, Fellows, and staff engaging in Translational and Clinical Investigator-Initiated Research include the following:
Clinical Research
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Conducting Clinical Research; CITI Training; Investigator-Initiated Research Training (Study Conduct and Investigator Responsibilities; Drafting an Investigator-Initiated Protocol; Feasibility Assessments for Investigator-Initiated Research; Informed Consent Development; Development of Essential Study Documents; IRB submissions and training; Initial IRB Application & Continuing Reviews; Building a REDCap database (In coordination with the Office of Biostatistics); Research and Data Coordinator Resources (data collection phase); Quality Assurance and Monitoring of Study Data; Securing Research Supplies & Materials; Visitors Engaged in Research (required paperwork, badges, and EMR access).
Translational Science
Biosafety and Environmental Health Policy/Training; Research Facility Management; Equipment; Certification/Calibrations of Equipment (Chemical Fume Hoods, Biosafety Cabinets); Chemical and Hazardous Waste, Inventories, and Acquisitions of Chemicals and Gases; Hazardous Waste Storage and Removal; Laboratory Space; Laboratory Safety; Laboratory Inspections (in coordination with UTK) and Maintenance of Research Facilities; Visitors Engaged in Research; Securing Research Supplies & Materials.

Pre-Award: Internal & External Grant Policies; Identifying Funding Opportunities; Internal Routing Process (MRA, MTA’s, NDA’s, grant submissions); Pre-award (Submission preparation, budget, and budget justifications, point of contact for collaborating institutions).
Post-award: Coordinating with the Business Office for research account set-up; Management of research accounts.
